🪨 Bicaz Gorge by motorcycle (DN12C)

A short road through the Eastern Carpathians, between Transylvania and Moldavia. It passes Lacu Roșu (the Red Lake), then enters the gorge, where the rock walls come close to the road.

Where to stop

Gheorgheni — fuel and a break before the mountains
Lacu Roșu — the classic stop on the route
Bicaz Gorge — the narrow stretch between the rock walls
Bicaz — the eastern end of the road

In the gorge the road is narrow with tight bends, and in summer there are many tourists and stalls along the side. Ride slowly and don't stop the group in a bend.

Fill up before the climb: petrol stations are rare in the mountains.
Up in the mountains it's much colder than in the valley: take an extra layer and spare gloves.
Agree on the regroup points before setting off, not on the road.
Keep your distance and ride staggered in the lane, not side by side.
Don't stop the group in bends or in a tunnel; stop only where there's room for all the motorcycles.
